Five Factors to consider when choosing a finish type

Choosing the right finish for your sports floor(s) is crucial for both performance and aesthetics. With so many options available, it can get overwhelming to know where you should begin! Follow these five factors when making your decision and pick the perfect finish type for your space.

#1. Initial Cost vs. Long-Term Cost

It’s tempting to go for the cheapest option upfront, especially when you have a tight budget. The true cost of finish extends far beyond the initial price tag. Consider durability, maintenance frequency, and warranty options.

Note: Always ask about warranties on finish!

#2. Application Factors

Not all finish types are created equal when it comes to application. Consider curing time and environmental factors.

For example, oil-based finish takes longer to cure than water-based finish, meaning your floor(s) will be out of commission longer.

#3. Durability and Traffic Levels

It’s important to consider the amount and type of activity your floor will endure. High-impact sports like basketball or volleyball need a tough, abrasion-resistant finish, while activities like yoga and Pilates tend to do find with softer, more forgiving finish types.

#4. Environmental Factors

Be mindful of the environmental impact a particular finish type can have. Did you know that oil finishes tend to emit higher levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)? This requires precautions when applying. Please note: Our FLR experts are knowledgeable about oil finish precautions, needs, and chemistry! If you have questions, we are available any time.

#5. Your Wood Type and Maintenance Required

Different wood types have different needs when it comes to finish and maintenance. When understood and cared for properly, sports floors can last many, many years! It’s important that your team know your sports floor’s wood needs.

By considering these five factors, you are better educated, and in turn, better able to choose the right finish for your sports floor(s)! Remember, the ideal finish will not only look great, it will perform well.
